Football Speed Training With WAGS
There are many ways athletes can develop their speed training for football workouts. This article will focus on the use of weighted agility gloves or W.A.G.S. as part of their football speed training program.
First we will examine how the upper body and lower body work together, which will show why athletes need to develop strong core muscles. The upper body serves as the stimulus for the lower body. Hands and feet coordinate simultaneously, so a slow, weak, inefficient upper body will be countered by a slow, weak, inefficient lower body.
Why Train With Weighted Agility Gloves?
The hands and feet move together, adding weighted agility gloves to the hands adds resistance not bulk. We have all seen joggers and walkers carrying the small hand weights while doing their work out. This will add some speed, much like you can move faster after carrying a 5 or 10 lb back pack when working out. As you remove weight you actually trick your body into moving faster.
The weights in the WAGS are over the fingers and on the back of the hands. The gloves come with weights and you can order more.
The difference being hand weights add stress as well as resistance to the hands and arms, while a pair of WAGS adds resistance. This creates a relaxed state creating a more efficient work out and allows for better muscle memory development. WAGS are so much easier to use than a set of hand dumbbells.
Because the weights are on your hands and not in them you have more flexibility on your work outs. Unlike using hand bar bells you have the freedom to practice your sport while increasing strength and speed. Regardless of what you play in football in you can practice position. Linemen will see an increase in speed bring their hands and arms up for blocking, defensive linemen will see an increase in speed and strength using their hands to fend off blocks and receivers will notice they have more left in the 4th quarter when they have to reach high to make that critical catch.
